Slow Jams
Believe it or not, it’s already been two years since Slow Club released their 2012 sophomore effort, Paradise, on Moshi Moshi Records. This was the album thatshot the Sheffield duo into indie stardom, revealed the band’s more mature sound and eventually paved the way for mainstream success. Now, on July 14th, the prayers of Slow Club fans the world over are finally being answered.
This month the band not only gear up for the long awaited release of their third album, Complete Surrender, on Caroline International but they’ve also been kind enough to kick-off of a UK tour that includes at least two London gigs, both of which fall on the album’s July 14th release date.
However, if you’re looking for something a bit more intimate, it is on Friday, July 25th that Slow Club will be making their fourth in-store appearance over at Banquet Records in Sunny, Kingston upon Thames.
From what the band has released so far in the way of new jams, it seems they’re headed in a slightly more thoughtful, chilled out direction and away from the booze soaked heart break and loss that so often seemed to encapsulate the mood on their latter release.
Instrumentally, the band also continues to push the line between guitar driven melodies and the synth backing that fans became ever so accustomed to in their earlier days. This is heard namely on the Album’s title track Suffering You, Suffering Me, which features one of the most undeniably catchy opening guitar parts I’ve heard in a long time. At the same time, Rebecca Taylor’s vocals seem a bit more controlled than on previous recordings, reminding us more of a tasteful swoon than the pop rock singer we were used to. Both stylistically and mentally, the album seems picks up where Paradise left off.
While the theatrics of a large, concert hall may be lacking, this is exactly the kind of stripped down, bare bones performance that gives Rebecca Taylor and Charles Watson the credit they deserve, as both songwriters and musicians. It also gives the fans a chance to hear some tracks off of the new album from only an arm’s length away.
