After moving to Los Angeles, Judy Wood (Michelle Monaghan) juggles single parenthood with her new job as an immigration lawyer. Becoming deeply invested in the apparently hopeless case of Asefa Ashwari (Leem Lubany), a woman persecuted for attempting to educate girls in Afghanistan, Wood risks running out of money for her practice as she takes on hundreds of other similarly desperate clients.
