Best Special Screenings in London This Week
Fancy a film with that added oomph? Discover the most interesting, unique, and weird screenings in the capital...
London: vast, diverse, and always ready to surprise you, no matter your thing. In Walloh’s case, it’s cinema, which means we’ve searched the capital for the most interesting film screenings taking place this week. From a doo-wop musical about a talking plant to a Tom Cruise classic screened in a carpark, there’s bound to be something here for everyone…
Grease on a Boat on the Thames
When? 20:00, Tuesday 4th June How much? £29.00 Where? Tower Hill
What is it?
Beloved John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John musical, Grease, screened on the top deck of a boat. On the Thames. Like that’s the most normal thing in the world.
Tell me more, tell me more…
The first of many boat-based screenings taking place this summer, courtesy of Time Out’s “Movies on the River.” You’ll enjoy a sunset cruise whilst admiring the views, before the boat comes to a stand-still for the actual movie. Our chills are multiplying just thinking about it. Click here for tickets and more info.
The Night of the Iguana + Q&A with Clive Owen, Lia Williams and Anna Gunn
When? 20:30, Tuesday 4th June How much? From £10.20 Where? Southbank
What is it?
John Huston’s adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ play, The Night of the Iguana, about a disgraced priest getting up to no good in Mexico. Actors Clive Owen (Children of Men), Lia Williams (The Crown), and Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) will be in attendance for a Q&A afterwards.
Sounds interesting! What else?
Owen, Williams, and Gunn are set to star in a West End revival of Williams’ play this month, so they’re sure to have some insightful thoughts on the material. Maybe you can sneak in a question (or five) about Breaking Bad, too. Click here for tickets and more info.
Little Shop of Horrors + Q&A with Ellen Greene
When? 20:30, Tuesday 4th June How much? From £10.00 Where? Leicester Square
What is it?
Musical film (and cult classic) Little Shop of Horrors, screened at the iconic Prince Charles Cinema in Leicester Square. Actor Ellen Greene – who played the loveable Audrey in both the film and the original Broadway production – will be in attendance for a Q&A.
Sounds interesting! What else?
This special event marks the first time Greene – who also starred in Luc Besson’s Leon and TV’s Pushing Daisies – will attend a screening of the film in London. Sadly Audrey II won’t be there, for obvious safety reasons. Click here for tickets and more info.
Finding Vivian Maier + Q&A with Author Christina Hesselhold
When? 20:30, Wednesday 5th June How much? From £9.00 Where? Soho
What is it?
A screening of the 2013 documentary Finding Vivian Maier, about the renowned street photographer who remained largely unknown during her lifetime, followed by a Q&A with author Christina Hesselhold.
Sounds interesting! What else?
Hesselhold has written a new novel, Vivian, based on the life of the reclusive artist, and will be there to discuss her latest work alongside the documentary. You couldn’t pack more Vivian Maier into a single evening, basically. Click here for tickets and more info.
Top Gun on a Roof in Stratford
When? 21:00, Thursday 6th June How much? From £15.95 Where? Stratford
What is it?
Tom Cruise classic, Top Gun, screened on the 7th floor of a carpark in Stratford (it’s way more glamorous than it sounds, trust us). For the price of entry you’ll also get a pair of personal headphones, a blanket, and fantastic city-wide views.
Sounds interesting! What else?
Nibbles and drinks will be available throughout the night, whilst if you arrive early you’ll be able to join in with games and fun hosted by the SFG Club. Thursday is clearly the new Friday as far as this event is concerned. Click here for tickets and more info.
Gloria Bell with Drinks and Dancing
When? 19:00, Friday 7th June How much? From £15.95 Where? Soho
What is it?
The Julianne Moore-starring film, Gloria Bell, based on award-winning, Columbian drama Gloria from 2013. True to the titular character’s free-spirited nature, this Soho screening will feature its own disco party, complete with live DJ.
Sounds interesting! What else?
You’ll also get a “Gloria Bellini” cocktail, included in the price of admission. What better way to let your hair down, embarrass your friends by dancing in a cinema, or both? Click here for tickets and more info.
