Calm Before the Storm
It’s now the middle of April and the 2015 festival season in the UK is rumbling slowly but surely towards us. Come Hell or high water, we’ll be out there this summer up to our ankles in mud, standing in the pissing rain in Reading or maybe we’ll get lucky and the London Field Day Festival will produce a brilliant and sunny opportunity for a cookout (grilling, another reason Londoners flock to this Hackney Park when the weather is nice). No matter which summer music festivals are currently on the to do list, don’t forget that the time to get your tickets is now.
While most of us picture a summer music festival as taking place in a field with thousands of people and a massive stage, there are quite a few smaller events taking place through out the summer that might fit better with your budget.
One of my personal favourites brings us quite a distance from the jam packed bars and venues of Camden and Shoreditch to the often overlooked music halls and pubs of West London (and no, I’m not talking to the line of kids sitting outside the O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire waiting to see Meghan Trainor…)
What I am talking about in Shepherd’s Bush is the fifth annual Bushstock festival, put on by Communion Music and taking place this year on June 13th. Although a smaller, one-day festival spread out over this eclectic, West London neighborhood, Bushstock takes place in six different venues including The Defector’s Weld, Albertine Wine Bar, Bush Hall, University of the Arts London and St. Stephen’s Church.
Part of the beauty of this festival is that not all of these venues are specifically designed for putting on gigs, so the atmosphere tends to be a lot more intimate than your average big day out to the main stage. The fact that they manage to squeeze in over forty acts is a testament to what a success this festival is and how great it is for the music scene in West London.
Head over to the Bushstock website for tickets, locations and to check out the 2015 line up, which is growing as we speak. Some early favourites include Beans on Toast, Honeyblood, Beach Baby and Tora.
