In Dynamics: The Return of the Three Piece

It’s not often that you go to a gig with a specific band in mind and then end up totally falling for their opener.  Such was the case with In Dynamics at The Stillery in Camden this past Friday when I wandered up there, with a bloated stomach full of pho, to see the last free show of Bleach Blood’s five gig residency (check out the Walloh article on the blossoming, London Indie/Dance punks Bleach Blood here). What I ended up with was a guitar player’s wet dream.

Walking in, I noticed two pristinely beautiful Orange guitar amps cheerfully bookending the stage along with a light blue Fender Stratocaster that was screaming at me to play with it. (I didn’t, of course.  That would be disrespectful. I ordered a drink instead.)

Despite having been a band for three years, I’d never heard In Dynamics before and I wasn’t even aware that it was their gear I was salivating over.  When they got up to open the show, their guitar tone sounded exactly how I expected.  In a word, butter.  The best of British amplification, paired with an American guitar that produces such a tone it becomes a shame to stick in a set of earplugs.

While Alt/Pop Rock is a good way to define this Sussex three piece, their confident, refined sound and musical prowess stands out in an era full of bands desperately trying to appeal to anyone and everyone.

They’re tight, they have a great stage presence for a three piece, which is something I’ve always admired and their ability to play interesting, dynamic songs with a fairly basic setup is a breath of fresh air in a world where pedal boards one could use to comfortably float over to Normandy have become the norm.

There are literally thousands of new bands bursting onto the scene every year. Each time we see a sleek cover photo and a few carefully posed promo shots pop up on twitter or facebook we all breath a collective sigh and take comfort in the brilliant sarcasm of Pavement’s Cut Your Hair:

Music scene is crazy
Bands start up each and every day
I saw another one just the other day
A special new band

Luckily, The release of In Dynamics’ 2014 EP Questions is a welcome exception and is going to fill that dreaded iTunes library void we’ve all come to fear when we go too long without discovering a new artist.

Stay tuned to Walloh for info on upcoming In Dynamics gigs in London.  Until then, test the waters with a free download of their single Waking Life.  For a taste of their live show from the safety of your…where ever you are, check out their Live at the Lab session at Soundlab Studios in Essex here.
