Lucky 13
One thing that we’ve always loved about Beck and his music is that he’s always consistent. Whether you did or didn’t like his last album or you thought his sound was straying a bit too much in one direction or another or even that you didn’t appreciate having to pick up an instrument and play Song Reader to experience its contents (or have someone a bit more musical play it for you). All in all, you’d be hard pressed to find someone willing to label Beck as an artist that has failed to stay true to himself, his fans and his ethos for creating intelligent, original music and incredibly, he’s done it this way for almost three decades.
If someone even mentions Beck, many of us are liable to spend the rest of the day wandering down the street humming Loser or Devil’s Haircut to ourselves until we’re sick to death of it. While it’s true that they are undeniable classics and even eighteen years on, nobody can downplay the important place that Odelay holds in Alternative Rock, it’s for that reason alone that it’s worth mentioning that back in February of 2014, Beck released his thirteenth studio album, Morning Phase. Being his first album since he suffered a spinal injury in 2008 that apparently prevented him from even picking a guitar for most of that time, Morning Phase’s first two singles I won’t Be Long and Gimme were received by fans with enthusiasm but overall, the album has been was met with mixed reviews as being up to snuff but essentially more of the same.
Come see Beck along with supporting act Jenny Lewis (formerly of Rilo Kiley) at the iTunes Festival at the Roundhouse in Camden on Tuesday, September 2nd. You can either get your tickets at the door at 6pm or apply to get them for free. Those arriving after 8pm are not guaranteed entry!
