Official Record Store Day Releases TBA 10/3/15

There is just over a month to go before Record Store Day 2015, when the Christmas Day of the music world finally rolls around again. Unlike with Christmas however, March 10th is the day we all get to find out what our presents are going to be, long before the proverbial Santa Claus of discounted releases visits, as he does every year on the third weekend of April.  Does this ruin the surprise?  Maybe, although does give us a chance to make our lists a bit more accurate and avoid any of the disappointing, disorganised looting (can looting be organised?) that would no doubt occur without the pre Record Store Day announcement of what’s on offer from the good people over at XFM Radio.

In case you weren’t aware, Record Store Day was first conceived in the States in 2007, as a way to give support to independently owned record stores across the US and had spread to bigger cities in the UK by 2008.  This was a boost that was badly needed as sharing music over the internet was becoming the norm and kids who once saved their birthday morning or allowance to spend £20 on a new record were now proudly proclaiming to their friends that they hadn’t actually bought a CD in over a year.

Record Store Day and the resurgence of vinyl for anyone who loves to have and to hold a piece of their favourite music with a much larger album cover to boot were naturally attracted to the idea of supporting a local shop that not only had to stand up to places like HMV but now the unstoppable power of the internet.  In 2009, Record Store Day went international, expanded from just the bigger cities to the rest of the UK and has been a huge hit ever since.

This year, over two hundred different record stores are participating across the UK.  If this figure seems a bit overwhelming, head over to the participating stores section of the official website to locate the store nearest you.  Tune in to XFM at 7:30pm on March 10th to hear the first announcement of over 350 albums and 200 singles in RSD releases or check out their website any time between now and April 18th for more info.

It may be a bit early but given the March 10th announcement, Happy Record Store Day, wherever you are. Personally, I’ll be down at Banquet Records to celebrate their ten-year anniversary in Kingston.
