Three Questions #1: The Sirens
Who wants to read a long interview?
No
One.
Time is short and we live in a world where we consume a little at a time. Two questions is just too short and four is just too damn long. Let us gain some insight into the bands making the rounds on the London music circuit just three questions at a time. Walloh mini-grilled Josh Newton of London-based psychedelic grunge outfit The Sirens.
Tell us about your experience of the London music scene.
Our experience is hit and miss. It’s always very hard to know whether a night you’re about to play will be a good one or not. We’ve had some bad nights playing to the sound guy or stuck on a bill with five reggae bands and then us headlining? Bizarre really, as we like reggae but would have preferred a more suited night! I’ve always enjoyed the Barfly or warehouse parties, as you always get a good crowd (who wants to just play to friends?) – You also never know who’s in the audience watching.
What is your best London show to date?
I’ve always enjoyed playing at the Hideaway Festival in Tottenham. It’s a warehouse party that lasts for days. As far as shows I’ve seen, QOTSA at Wembley and Jack White at O2 were both amazing.
Renowned venues such as 12 Bar Club closed this month. What is your take on it?
I think it’s terrible that a street as iconic and full of musical history such as Denmark Street can be bulldozed for a Crossrail track, It’s annoying but I think it’s something we see a lot in London, places like Italy seem to preserve history but we like to smash it all down and replace it with modern glass buildings and Starbucks.
Every town in Britain to me just looks like a different layout from the last – same shit different geography. I’m not sure 12 Bar Club could of done anything to stop it (we all signed that futile petition). it wasn’t a case of being unpopular, as I often drank there and it was always packed out.
It’s just a case of being in the way of a billion pound project and fat cats and big wigs not giving a shit about Black Sabbath, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Jimi Hendrix and countless others who recorded or stayed on that street. Again, I’m not sure what venues could do to make sure they’re not closed down, drinking and music are as popular as ever, thank God.
If you missed the awesome band The Sirens earlier this month at The Tooting Tram, you can catch them supporting MOHIT at The Lock Tavern, Camden on Feb 21.
