Once home to just pigeons and air conditioning units, rooftops have recently come into their own as quirky locations for film screenings - and few do the experience better than Rooftop Film Club. Pull up a chair, wrap yourself in one of the blankets provided, put on your personal headphones, and prepare for an unforgettable night. Don’t forget to admire the amazing views whilst you’re at it.

Luna Cinema

What is it? You probably guessed from the name that Luna Cinema pride themselves on screenings beneath the stars, but these guys sure know how to pick a location. From London’s most gorgeous parks to the grounds of some truly iconic buildings like Kensington Palace, Hampton Court, and Westminster Abbey, the biggest buzz here comes from being permitted entry long after poor Joe Public has been booted out.

Time Out: Movies on the River

What is it? Boats. Cinema. It was only a matter of time until these concepts found themselves flung together - and we have Time Out to thank for it. The idea is simple: board a boat at Tower Pier and take a cruise along the Thames whilst admiring the picturesque views. Then, at sunset, the boat docks and everyone gathers on the top deck for the screening. Try to imagine a better summer night. We dare you.

Film4 Summer Screen

What is it? If you’ve ever walked past London’s beautiful and iconic Somerset House and thought, “I’d love to watch a movie in that courtyard,” you’re in for a treat. Film4 Summer Screen gathers 2,000 film fans together on the cobbles to watch a mix of old classics and new favourites. There’s watching a film and then there’s watching a film.

Pop Up Screens

What is it? Pop Up Screens is all about the beautiful parks and laid-back atmosphere. Famed for their inflatable screen, you’ll find this company everywhere from Fulham to East Dulwich, showcasing a number of universally-beloved classics. Food - like BBQ - is almost always available, plus popcorn and (most importantly) a fully-stocked bar. Win win.

Summer Screens at Canary Wharf

What is it? The best thing about Summer Screens at Canary Wharf? The screenings, which take place in the lovely Canada Square Park, are totally free. Which means they’re perfect for anyone who wants to make the most of the capital without bankrupting themselves. Not to mention the location - surrounded by the iconic Canary Wharf high-rise buildings - is damn cool.

Anything else? Given these screenings are free, it’s probably a good idea to early to nab a good spot. Picnic mats will be available for sitting on.

Floating Film Festival

What is it? All aboard, shipmates. Everyone knows films are best-viewed atop a floating platform - and here’s your chance. Yes, Floating Film Festival will screen an array of old favourites and new gems throughout July within the very beautiful St. Katharine Docks area… on a floating pontoon. Settle into a deck chair or bean bag (the choice is yours) and enjoy!

The Nomad

What is it? Outdoor screenings with The Nomad offer true variation, from high-rise rooftops to spooky graveyards (really). They also pride themselves on their festival vibes (read as: good food) and immersive atmosphere. In other words: they always go that extra mile to ensure a memorable night. You don’t just get the advertised film with The Nomad, but an experience.

Summer by the River

What is it? Anyone looking to make the most of both the good weather and the river is sure to love Summer by the River, a three-month-long festival based around City Hall on the iconic Southbank (with a rather spectacular view of Tower Bridge). With food, drinks, and activities in abundance, it’s not to be missed. Better yet… the movie showings - screened every Tuesday night - are totally free to attend.
