After witnessing her son Alexander being arrested during a demonstration, staunch socialist Christiane suffers a massive heart attack and slips into a coma. Eight months later, she wakes and the doctor issues a stark warning to the siblings: keep Christiane calm at all times otherwise she will suffer another heart attack and die. In an effort to make his mother's recovery as smooth as possible, Alexander continues the charade of the old divided East and West Germany.
