Blacklisted Hollywood director Jules Dassin went to Paris in 1955 and made one of the most acclaimed French film noirs of the era, winning the director's prize at the Cannes Film Festival that year. Dassin adapted Auguste Le Breton's novel prompting then Cahiers film critic Francois Truffaut to observe, 'out of the worst crime novels I ever read, Jules Dassin has made the best crime film I've ever seen.'
