A small time swindler in war time Italy is forced to go undercover in a political jail
Genoa, 1943. Grimaldi is a swindler, pretending to be a colonel in the Italian army to get money from the families of the people who have been thrown into jail by the Nazis. Once caught, the Gestapo makes a deal with him: he will be permitted to remain alive if he impersonates the General Della Rovere, a leader of the Resistance who has just been shot by the Nazis, and then placed into a political jail in order to help to identify another Resistance leader.
