Inspired in part by China’s first workplace gender discrimination trial with a trans plaintiff from 2016, the film follows Li Jianguo (Huang Jingyi), a devout Christian who volunteers at a church, and who finds out that his only son, Li Huanyu (Yuan Weijie), plans to have sex reassignment surgery. He seeks guidance from others and receives a variety of different responses, resulting in conflict and misunderstandings.
