Film version of the Tony Award-winning stage musical, set in the cultural melting pot of New York's East Village during the late 1980s, when AIDS and homelessness are rife. Based loosely on Puccini's La Boheme, the story revolves around aspiring filmmaker Mark and his bohemian friends, including his ex-girlfriend Maureen, her lesbian lover Joanne, HIV positive roommate Roger, heroin-addicted dancer Mimi, and drag queen street performer Angel. As these lost souls search for their place in a rapidly evolving world, they face heartache, tragedy and the first flushes of romance.
