Thousands of volunteers flocked to Israeli kibbutzim over the years – from baby boomers enchanted by the movement’s socialist foundations in the sixties and seventies to unemployed Brits who were after a bit of fun in the sun (and free lodgings) in the early eighties. They lent a helping hand while also introducing the locals to the joys – or perils – of recreational drugs and mixed marriages.
