The late Dutch resistance fighter Truus Wijsmuller did not have children of her own but was responsible for saving the lives of thousands from the Nazis. Hugely compassionate but also courageous and stubborn, she was not easily deterred by the overwhelming might of the enemy: she met with Adolf Eichmann in 1938 to negotiate a deal to let 10,000 Jewish children flee to England, and personally ensured many of them boarded the trains and boats that led them to safety.
